Committee Handbook
Committee duties
All committee members are responsible for:
- moderating and encouraging discussion on the ULMS forum and facebook groups
- answering enquiries from society members of members of the public
- encouraging the social side of ULMS, attending all socials (or giving apologies)
- ushering at concerts
- helping to poster concert adverts on campus and in town
- adhering to the 7 Nolan principles and the constitution
Additional responsibilities for individual posts are listed under that post''s title.
Details of the running of the AGM can be found in the constitution. If for any reason a committee member has to resign within the year an EGM will be held to elect a new committee member, or a new member can be co-opted.
Ensembles
See individual ensemble pages for details of rehearsals etc.
Some ensembles (mainly Big/ Brass Band and Swing Group) may have the opportunity to do other concerts. These reps are also responsible for:
- Liaising with members of the public who wish to book ensembles for concerts
- Organising and agreeing with whoever books them how much they will be paid
- Agree the price of transport with the committee and if it will be subsidised before booking
- Liaising with other ensemble reps to borrow equipment if it will not be available for that ensemble's rehearsal
Brass Band can busk to distribute flyers advertising concerts. Any money collected is split 50/50 between the players and ULMS.
The Brass Band rep should organise an annual trip to the Whit Friday Brass Band Marches in Saddleworth.
The Choir rep has a few additional responsibilities:
- organising accompaniment for concerts, including approaching performers and relevant reps e.g. orchestra
- acquiring and distributing accompaniment music in good time so accompanists have time to practise
- scheduling accompaniment rehearsal time with the conductor
- maintaining a list of signed out music so missing copies can be traced
Orchestra auditions require a little more planning than those of other ensembles. The rep should:
- make a sign-up timetable
- book rooms
- publicise directions to the rooms
- book practice rooms for auditionees to warm up
- arrange accompanists for set pieces
Auditions
The principal conductor, ensemble rep, and either the President, Secretary, or Treasurer make up audition panels. If they are unavailable the committee must approve another person. If no-one auditions for positions the rep may invite a member to play.
Concerts
ULMS puts on 12 major concerts a year. Details of when these take place are on the concerts page.
